Newcastle United defender Jamaal Lascelles came in for praise from BBC pundit Neil Lennon last night.

The Magpies are now put of the relegation zone after a huge win over Everton in the Premier League.

Eddie Howe masterminded a third victory of the season for the club. The team were far superior to the Toffees at St. James’ Park.

After falling behind to an own goal, Newcastle instantly hit back and then Ryan Fraser and Kieran Trippier scored in the second-half to seal a 3-1 victory.

Allan Saint-Maximin was breathtaking throughout but really, there were fantastic performances all throughout the team.

One man who is rightly coming in for a lot of praise after last night is Lascelles.

The 28-year-old has been much maligned this season. He’s undoubtedly turned in some poor performances.

But last night he was a rock, and Lennon particularly liked his response to scoring an own goal.

Commentating for 5 Live, he said (BBC Sport, 9.30pm): “No doubt Newcastle are good value for money – they have been the hungrier, more dominant team as the game has worn on.

“I have been critical of Jamaal Lascelles in the past, but he has had a great game tonight and led the team brilliantly.”

According to Sofascore data, Lascelles made five clearances which was more than anybody else. He also made five interceptions which was again the most of anybody.

Lascelles was brilliant against Everton and deserves plaudits

He has had his criticism this season. And rightly so at times.

But last night Lascelles was a colossus for Newcastle. It was a brilliant show of character to get in there and force the equaliser after his unfortunate own goal.

And then for the rest of the evening, Lascelles was just solid as anything alongside Fabian Schar, with Everton unable to create anything.

Maybe the arrival of Dan Burn is already serving as a catalyst for the star.

Newcastle fans will simply hope for more of the same when he takes to the field.
