Newcastle United’s Dan Burn has had his say on Chelsea player Kai Kavertz’s elbow to his head. There was a lot of controversy around the yellow card that was given. Many thought the German should’ve been sent off, including Burn.
The Toon centre-back even developed a fairly nasty cut from the challenge. Later on, in the game Burn would switch off for a second and Havertz would grab the winner.
Speaking to NUFC TV, the 29-year-old gave his opinion on the challenge by the Chelsea man and their late winning goal.
The defender said: “I thought it was a sending off. I can guarantee if it was the other way around, I wouldn’t have been on the pitch.
“The ref said because he was looking at the ball the whole time, that’s why he hadn’t been [sent off]. As I say, I thought it was bit naughty, but he’s not given it and he’s ended up scoring at the end.
“It’s cost us a little bit, but you can’t complain about it too much. These top-quality players can punish if you switch off for a second, and that’s what happens.”

Burn can hold his head high despite switching off for the goal
Since he signed for the Magpies in January, Burn has been excellent in black and white. He’s been very consistent and formed a strong partnership with Fabian Schar.
On his debut for Newcastle, he was given the Man of the Match award by Sky Sports against Aston Villa. Despite his error against Chelsea, the man from Blyth still played very well and was a strong third of the centre-back trio.
Jamaal Lascelles played for the first time since the 3-1 win at home against Everton. He missed the Villa game due to illness and didn’t get another game until last weekend.
It demonstrates how well Burn has played to keep the skipper out. Against Everton, Lascelles played well. He recovered from his unlucky goal to get the assist for the equaliser, which was a Mason Holgate own goal. Also, he put in a strong defensive shift.

When Newcastle was on the hunt for a new centre-back, some fans believed that anyone would be better than no one. But not only has Burn improved the defence.
He’s transformed it, the Toon have leaked a lot fewer goals since his arrival and managed to keep clean sheets against the likes of Aston Villa and Brentford.
With Everton being the next opponents, Burn can be confident going into that match. His performances so far have not let him down at all.
