Mohammed Salisu hints at Southampton future amid Newcastle links

Southampton’s relegation could be beneficial to Newcastle United.

James Ward-Prowse continues to be linked with a move to join Eddie Howe’s side and it’s difficult to imagine a player of such quality plying his trade in the Championship next season.

The England international isn’t the only Saints star to be touted for a move up to Newcastle, however.

Indeed, defender Mohammed Salisu was mooted as a potential addition last January and again earlier this year.

Howe is thought to be a big fan of the Ghana international, who was reportedly left out of recent Saints squads due to doubts in regards to his commitment even before an injury.

Salisu posts message to Southampton fans

With that in mind, it’d be easy to imagine Salisu will look for a move now the club have been relegated.

Still, the 24-year-old reached out to Saints fans following their relegation and insisted the focus was now on getting the club back to the Premier League at the first time of asking.

“We want to assure you that every player and member of our team is determined to come back stronger and better prepared for the next season,” he wrote on Instagram.

“Despite the outcome, I am incredibly proud of our team and the effort that each and every player put in throughout the season. We know that there are many lessons to be learned and improvements to be made. We are grateful for each and every one of our fans.

Salisu could be a cheap addition this summer

The Athletic recently claimed Newcastle were eager to bring in two defenders this summer.

While Salisu has hardly covered himself in glory this season, he can hardly be blamed for the wider failings at Southampton.

Out of contract in the summer of 2024, there would be an upside to signing Salisu.

Hailed as “rock solid” by Alan Shearer, Salisu has plenty of years in which to grow and his dwindling contract status hardly leaves Saints in a particularly strong bargaining position.

Boasting Premier League experience and a player talked up for his performances when Southampton were enjoying more positive fortunes, there is surely more to come from Salisu.
