Mikel Arteta was not a happy man after his Arsenal team lost to Newcastle United earlier this season.

The Magpies won 1-0 at St James’ Park, with Anthony Gordon scoring the only goal of the game. However, his goal was filled with controversy.

There were three reasons VAR looked to rule it out, which led to a lengthy delay. There were claims that the ball was out, while they also looked at a possible foul and offside.

But they decided to give the goal, as Newcastle went on to win what was an incredibly physical game.

Mikel Arteta was furious after the final whistle, stating that the officiating was a disgrace. It was an incredible rant, and one that took the gloss off what was an impressive win for Eddie Howe‘s side.

But what does Arteta really think of the Magpies? Well, he has now given his answer.

Mikel Arteta gives his honest opinion on Newcastle United

Ahead of Arsenal vs Newcastle, Mikel Arteta has spoke to the media. He has given his thoughts on the Magpies, and explained why they are such a good side.

“Well, they are a really good team,” he told Arsenal’s official website.

“They are very well coached, they have fantastic players. They have great spirit within the team and they are difficult to beat for us and for many, many opponents.”

Newcastle must rewrite history despite Arteta praise

Arteta has been very complimentary about Newcastle United, although he did not reserve any special praise for Jason Tindall. They clashed at the Emirates last season, as a spirited Toon side drew 0-0.

That continued Newcastle’s goalless run at the Emirates. They have not scored at that stadium since 2014, and they have only ever won there once since it was opened. That came in 2010 when Andy Carroll netted the winner for Chris Hughton’s Magpies.

Newcastle fans would love to see a similar moment in North London, but Arteta will be out for revenge. Despite all his praise for Howe’s side, he will be desperate to win against a team that he has admitted can be so tough to beat.
