Miguel Almiron could be set for an eve later return to Newcastle pre-season training.

The midfielder had been due to come back to the club July 5.

But that is now in some doubt, with Almiron having limped off in Paraguay’s Copa America 1-0 defeat to Uruguay.

Almiron picked up a hamstring injury and left the field visibly distressed.

Paraguay made it through the group stages despite the loss, but Almiron’s further participation in the tournament from here is under huge threat.

They face Peru next in the quarter-final on Sunday.

Newcastle are said to be working with the Paraguayan FA to assess the damage.

Almiron’s setback comes after he produced a stellar performance for his country against Chile, in which he both scored and assisted.

Newcastle will be hopeful it is nothing too serious.

The club are hoping to get off to a good start against West Ham United in their Premier League first game, as they did last season with a 2-0 victory.

Almiron’s issue comes after a gruelling 2020/21 season which saw him appear 39 times for the Magpies, and play 2798 minutes.

He’s also played nine games for Paraguay since the start of 2020/21.

On social media, fans expressed their dismay about Almiron’s injury that saw him go off in tears:
