Miguel Almiron established himself as a Newcastle United hero last season.

While not always convincing since his move from Atlanta in 2019, the forward enjoyed his best season to date last time out as Newcastle made it back into the Champions League.

The goals against the likes of Fulham, Everton, Tottenham and Aston Villa will live long in the memory as the 29-year-old finally showed the kind of end product so missing under Rafa Benitez and Steve Bruce.

So it was hardly much of a surprise to see Almiron firmly as the star attraction during the Premier League Summer Series draw against Chelsea.

Played at the home of his former club in the Mercedes-Benz Arena, the Paraguayan scored as Newcastle drew with the Blues.

Speaking after the game, Almiron named the one player he hoped was watching.

Indeed, as relayed by Newcastle’s official website, the forward was speaking to Alex Aljoe of the Premier League.

Aljoe translated the South American’s words immediately after the full-time whistle, with Almiron being given a standing ovation.

“He says he hopes Josef Martinez was watching because that celebration is what he used to do when he was playing with Josef Martinez here.

“He has so many incredible memories with him so he dedicated that goal to him with that celebration.”

It seems Almiron got his wish

Indeed, not as if Almiron would know given he was on the pitch but Josef Martinez, his former teammate at Atlanta, was in attendance.

As the Newcastle star came off to a standing ovation, the now-Inter Miami forward tweeted: “You deserved all the love my hermano [love heart emoji] enjoy the crown [tearful face].

We never got to see the Almiron-Martinez partnership at St James’ Park despite the links but it’s fair to say both players are in great places in their respective careers now.
