Miguel Almiron has been in incredible form for Newcastle United this season, defying the odds to become the Magpies’ top scorer.
The 28-year-old has scored eight times this season, seven of which came in October. His heroics last month won him the Premier League Player of the Month award, while he also won best goal for his outrageous volley against Fulham.
It has been a real joy to watch Almiron play so well this season, and it is a real shame that his momentum is being halted by the World Cup.
The winger won’t be competing in Qatar, with his nation Paraguay failing to qualify for the tournament. However, the South American side have still been in action this week.
Almiron won his 48th cap for his country overnight, but it didn’t end well for the speedster.
International duty ends early for in-form Miguel Almiron
Paraguay faced Peru away from home in a friendly in the early hours of Thursday morning. Almiron was named in the starting lineup, but couldn’t inspire his side to victory.
They lost 1-0 in Lima, while Almiron had a game to forget. He was taken off at half time, signalling an early end to his international exploits for 2022.
Paraguay do have another game this week. They are set to take on Colombia in Miami on Saturday night/Sunday morning. However, Almiron will not be involved.
After the defeat to Peru, it has been reported that Miggy is set to return home. He will not travel with the group for the game against Colombia due to ‘muscle overload‘.
Hopefully that just means fatigue, and he can now get some rest ahead of the mini pre-season Eddie Howe is set to put his players through.
Almiron has been vital for us this season and, while he failed to shine for Paraguay last night, he remains a key player in the black and white of Newcastle.
