Newcastle United were beaten 2-0 by Chelsea in the Premier League last night, and Mick Quinn is in no doubt the Magpies are facing a relegation battle.
The Blues went away from Stamford Bridge with all three points having not had to work all that hard for their win.
Newcastle were terrible in the first-half and things didn’t improve much after half-time.
Goals came from Olivier Giroud and then Timo Werner – a man who had not scored since November 7.
With Fulham looking a lot more competitive in recent weeks, Quinn believes Newcastle are firmly in a battle to save their Premier League status.
He said on talkSPORT this morning: “You look at some of the players, Jonjo Shelvey, Dwight Gayle. Andy Carroll (£75,000-a-week, Spotrac) passed his sell-by date. Joelinton couldn’t hit a barn door. These are guys that fall below Premier League class.
“Definitely (in Fulham’s reach). They are in a relegation fight. They can get out of it, because they have got (Allan) Saint-Maximin, (Miguel) Almiron and the kid’s done well since he’s come in, Joe Willock.
“They’ve got a chance but if they play like that last night… first-half was desperate.”
Relegation battle most definitely on
The Magpies may have recorded two wins against Everton and Southampton recently, but Quinn is correct to say the club are in a relegation battle.
Fulham are definitely looking more solid defensively of late, and Burnley are also much improved in recent weeks.
With Callum Wilson out for between six to eight weeks, Steve Bruce’s side are in trouble no question.
