West Ham ace Michail Antonio has praised Newcastle’s upturn in form in a chat with Magpies’ striker Callum Wilson.

The pair sat down to record the latest episode of The Footballer’s Football Podcast.

Antonio and Wilson got to talking about Newcastle, and how the Magpies have been in superb form of late.

Antonio said: “So you boys are flying. Seven unbeaten, what’s that five wins and two draws?”

Wilson replied: “The turn of form has been unreal by the boys. There’s been a real team effort and togetherness there.

Antonio added: “It’s like a bug isn’t it? Once you’ve got it once, you start to feel unbeaten. You go out there an you just want to win all the games. At the beginning of the season you were struggling, but now you’ve got it and you guys are on a nice run and playing well. And you are definitely playing well.”

Wilson then mentioned how he was rooting for Chris Wood, as a fellow striker, to start finding the back of the net.

Wood is yet to score for Newcastle since his £25 million switch from Burnley in January.

He has shown good link-up play and is working hard for the team. Hopefully that first goal will come very soon.

As Wilson showed his support for his teammate, Antonio joked that he surely didn’t want Wood to starting banging in the goals as that would potentially make it hard for him to get back in the starting XI.

He said: “Don’t lie! Why are you lying? Your team’s winning games mate. You’re unbeaten in seven. Your striker that’s come in for you hasn’t scored any goals but you’re winning games. Don’t lie! You wanna come back and get your place!”

Wood could do with finding goalscoring mojo ahead of Wilson return

Wilson will be returning near the end of the season, so Wood still has plenty of time to find his goalscoring mojo.

Hopefully as time goes on, the notion of Wilson returning will start to serve as a catalyst for the New Zealand international.

Wilson genuinely wants Wood to thrive whilst he’s on the sidelines.

But deep down he’ll be hoping that Howe will turn to him once he’s fit again. Even if Wood is scoring goals by that point.

All that really matters though until the end of the season is that Newcastle pick up points.

As £70,000-a-week star Antonio says, Newcastle are definitely playing well now, and the players have given themselves a great chance of survival.
