Newcastle United’s Callum Wilson has expressed his disappointment at picking up an injury so early into the season.
The 30-year-old is set to be out of action for a few of weeks, having picked up a hamstring problem in the 3-3 draw with Manchester City.
He was nowhere to be seen against Wolves last time out, and is set to miss the trip to Liverpool as well. It’s unclear when he will return to Eddie Howe’s side.
It’s absolutely gutting for Wilson, who had started the season in fine form. He had two goals form his opening three games, and was showing the form he needs to get into the England squad for the World Cup.
This injury will hinder his chances of going to Qatar, and the striker has now commented on his latest setback.
Antonio and Wilson comment on Newcastle star’s injury
Wilson has spoke about his injury on the latest episode of the Footballer’s Football Podcast. He also received sympathy from co-host Michail Antonio, who admitted he was ‘gutted’ when he found out.
Antonio: “I was actually gutted when I heard about your injury, in all seriousness. I had been in that situation with little niggles and it’s so frustrating.”
Wilson: “I had a little setback. Disappointing as I started the season well, felt like I found my form, found my rhythm. It’s only a couple of weeks, but it’s a couple of weeks I haven’t got to lose. Especially with last year having an Achilles issue and this year a little tweak in my hamstring.
“It’s frustrating because you do everything right, the ultimate professional, there’s not many people in the dressing room who are more professional than myself in terms of the way I live, the way I eat, the way I sleep, the way I recover so that’s the most frustrating thing.”
Early injury is exactly what Wilson didn’t need
With Wilson boasting ambitions of being named in Gareth Southgate’s World Cup squad, an early injury is the worst outcome possible. It’s even more frustrating given how well he was playing.
As he says, he hasn’t got time to lose. It’s already an uphill battle to force his way into Southgate’s plans. But he was doing all he could early on.
Now he is in the midst of a spell on the sidelines, while Newcastle have brought in another striker. Alexander Isak has arrived for a club record fee from Real Sociedad.
It is believed that Isak and Wilson can play together, but we won’t find out until the latter recovers from injury. Hopefully he isn’t out for much longer, for the team’s sake and his.
