Marc Overmars could reportedly become one of the first major hires by the new Newcastle United owners.
The Dutch legend has been linked with a move to St James’ Park in recent days, with De Telegraaf claiming that the Magpies are interested.
These claims have been backed up by the Times, who state that Overmars could become Newcastle’s director of football.
They report that the 48-year-old is open to a move to the Premier League.
Overmars does have experience in English football. He spent three seasons at Arsenal where he helped Arsene Wenger’s side win a league and cup double in 1998.
The Dutchman is now Ajax’s director of football, a post he has occupied since 2012.
Chopra wants to see Marc Overmars at Newcastle
He’s helped build an exciting generation of talent coming out of Ajax, which is why former Newcastle striker Michael Chopra is very excited about these rumours.
He wrote on Twitter: “Hearing reports in the Netherlands Overmars to NUFC as DOF wow what a great appointment that would be Ajax produce the best young players in the world to bring the Ajax philosophy to Newcastle wow.”
Appointing a sporting director or director of football is a huge decision for the new Newcastle owners. It will dictate the direction that the club is going in.
Bringing in Overmars would be extremely exciting. He has a keen eye for young talent, with a lot of his players going on to receive big moves to Europe’s biggest clubs.
He’s helped build some incredible teams at Ajax, including the side that nearly reached the 2019 Champions League final.
If he can help build a similar team on Tyneside, Overmars will be adored by Newcastle fans. Here’s hoping this is more than just a rumour.
