Eddie Howe has already made history with Newcastle United this season.
He became the first Newcastle United manager in 70 years to win domestic silverware, with Eddie Howe ending the Magpies’ trophy drought.
With Newcastle winning the Carabao Cup, this is already the best season in living memory for the club.
However, it could soon get even better. Newcastle’s win over Chelsea has put them on the brink of Champions League qualification, while the Magpies could even finish as high as second in the Premier League.
That would be a remarkable achievement.

Alan Shearer backs Eddie Howe to win manager of the season
If Newcastle United do manage to finish second in the Premier League, Alan Shearer believes that Eddie Howe has to be in the conversation to win manager of the season.
The Newcastle United legend has put the question to Micah Richards on The Rest Is Football podcast, with the former Manchester City defender admitting that Howe should certainly be in contention for the award.
Shearer: “If Newcastle finish second and win the Carabao Cup, does that not make Eddie Howe manager of the season?”
Lineker: “Tradition says that the man who wins the Premier League usually gets it, but you make a good point.”
Richards: “I think he’s got a good chance. I’ve got Slot to win it in his first season. We’ve talked about Nuno Espirito Santo, if they were to get Champions League, he’s had a terrific season. But I agree with you. He [Howe] is in there with a shout. To win silverware after so long and finish second would be a brilliant season.”
The last Newcastle United manager to win manager of the season
Eddie Howe has never won Premier League manager of the season with Newcastle United.
Even when he shockingly guided the Magpies to fourth in the 2022/23 season, he was beaten to the award by Pep Guardiola.
Since the Premier League manager of the season award was introduced at the end of the 1993/94 campaign, only one Newcastle United boss has picked up the accolade.
That was Alan Pardew in 2012. His Toon side remarkably finished fifth, narrowly missing out on Champions League football.
There have only been five instances when the award was won by a manager who did not lift the title. That would become six if Howe was the recipient this season.
However, it feels extremely likely that it will go to Arne Slot. He would be more than a worthy winner, lifting the Premier League title in Liverpool’s first season since Jurgen Klopp’s departure.
But if Howe can guide Newcastle to second, he will certainly run Slot close.
