Newcastle United co-owner Mehrdad Ghodoussi believe Newcastle would have beaten Chelsea on another day.
It was the Magpies’ first defeat since a 4-0 pumping off Manchester City back in December.
Eddie Howe has really turned things around at Newcastle, moving them away from relegation danger in recent weeks.
The Magpies played brilliantly at Stamford Bridge, but sadly lost 1-0. Kai Havertz scored the only goal of the game, with Newcastle’s backline momentarily switching off after almost 90 minutes of fantastic defending.
It was an afternoon dominated by the referee, with two big decision going against Newcastle. Havertz could have been sent off for an elbow on Dan Burn, while Newcastle incredibly weren’t awarded a penalty early in the second half.
Mehrdad Ghodoussi is ‘so proud’ of Newcastle
After the game, Ghodoussi hailed the Newcastle United team that suffered its first Premier League loss of 2022.
He wrote on Twitter: “So proud of this team. An incredible performance. The left everything on that pitch. Any other day and we’d be walking away with 3pts.”
It was an exceptional performance from Newcastle. It shows have far we’ve come under Howe.
We went toe-to-toe with the European champions, and are feeling aggrieved that we haven’t got anything from the game.
The Magpies battled for every ball and left it all on the pitch as Ghodoussi says. There was some heroic defending at times, while we were also a threat offensively.
Howe’s side pressed Chelsea incredibly high, and it often paid dividends. It was brave from Newcastle, but a clear example of the improved fitness levels from the lads in black and white.
In the end, a moment of magic from Havertz settled the game. It’s a hard one to take, but our unbeaten run had to come to an end at some point.
But Newcastle can still take a lot of confidence from their performance at Stamford Bridge. Ghodoussi is rightly ‘proud’ of the team.
