Matty Longstaff is giving Eddie Howe something to think about

Since Matty Longstaff was loaned out by Newcastle United to Mansfield Town on deadline day, the 21-year-old midfielder has made an impact for the Stags.

Last Friday, the Newcastle loanee netted once again as Mansfield lost 3-2 to Tranmere Rovers. That goal makes it 3 goals in 5 games for Longstaff.

The midfielder was called back from his original loan at Aberdeen just after Christmas. It had been not how he hoped, Longstaff failed to make an impact on the Scottish side’s midfield.

After hitting the ground running for Mansfield, Eddie Howe will have plans for Longstaff this summer

Whilst Newcastle has a number of midfield options, Matty will give Howe something to think about. His brother Sean is finding it difficult to find a starting XI place but did do well against Chelsea last weekend.

It might not be the right time to introduce the 21-year-old into the Newcastle squad next season. However, what Howe should consider is another loan move for Matty.

He’s so far proving he’s good enough to play in League Two, so perhaps a League One or even Championship loan would be best for Longstaff.

It’s all to play for in League Two. Mansfield is currently 9th in the league but only three points off an automatic spot in 3rd place. They have three games in hand on a number of teams around them so they can hope they can surge up the table.

It would send a message if the midfielder could play a key part in a push for promotion to Eddie Howe. Even if they don’t make automatics, they could still achieve via the Play-Offs.

Matty Longstaff has really bounced back from his poor loan spell in Scotland. He’s once again showing promise and will hope it’s the beginning of him reviving his Newcastle career.
