Matty Longstaff deserves respect for agreeing to loan move in League Two – Opinion

Right near the end of transfer deadline day, Matty Longstaff joined Mansfield Town on loan from Newcastle United until the end of the season. Earlier in the season, he was on loan at Aberdeen, but he really struggled. He was then sent back to Tyneside at the end of December.

Longstaff broke onto the scene for Newcastle in style. He scored a lovely outside the box strike in a 1-0 win over Manchester United. Later on in the season, he would yet again score against them at Old Trafford. Aside from that former manager Steve Bruce didn’t seem to give him much of a chance.

Some fans would’ve argued at times he deserved more opportunities than the midfield options that were starting. However, his move to League Two until the end of the season deserves a lot of respect in my opinion.

Considering the promise he’s shown, Longstaff could’ve seen the move as beneath him

With the promise shown by the 21-year-old for Newcastle at times, he could’ve easily snubbed the move. If anything, I have a much greater sense of respect for Matty. He’s willing to go to League Two and prove himself. In addition, it shows that getting minutes and game time is very important to him.

Furthermore, it demonstrates a high level of determination on the part of Longstaff. After a disappointing spell in Scotland, some would’ve stuck their head in the sand and maybe waited for the summer for a loan move. But the midfielder is straight back out there willing to give another loan move a go.

You’d hope with what he’s shown before, Longstaff can really boss League Two. Mansfield are currently 6th, so they’ll be pushing for promotion. Perhaps Matty pull the strings in the middle of the park and push Mansfield into League One.

I believe that Matty Longstaff, 21, deserves a great amount of respect. Taking the loan move to League Two is something that some players wouldn’t have done. They would’ve seen it as beneath them if they had the excitement that Longstaff had around them at one point.

But he didn’t, instead, he’s made it clear that getting minutes and consistent playing time is his priority. Both parties will hope that Longstaff can find his mojo at Mansfield as they hunt for promotion.
