Newcastle United youngster Matty Longstaff continued his good form on loan at Mansfield Town this weekend, as he set up the only goal in a 1-0 win.
The League Two side are up to sixth in the table now, and are looking to push for automatic promotion.
They are currently five points behind Exeter, but do have a couple of games in hand on them.
On Saturday, Mansfield took on Northampton Town, who are also chasing automatic promotion.
It ended up being a dominant performance from the hosts, with Oli Hawkins scoring the decisive goal midway through the first-half.
The result saw Mansfield set a new club record of 11 straight home wins.
And it was thanks in-part to Longstaff that the Stags took all three points again yesterday.
The Magpies youngster, who was making his eighth appearance for the club, put in a brilliant ball from a corner, with Hawkins meeting it with power.
That was Longstaff’s second assist for the club since his arrival, and manager Nigel Clough acknowledged the 22-year-old after the game.
He said (via Mansfield official): “[There were] A lot of good individual performances today, made up with a great team win.
“It was a good corner from Matty Longstaff [for the goal], we try to put it [the deliveries] in the right sort of areas and it’s a brilliant header.”
Longstaff thriving with Mansfield as he bids to catch Eddie Howe’s eye
Longstaff’s move to Aberdeen earlier this season was really disappointing.
But he seems to have that firmly behind him now and is having a productive spell in League Two.
It’s important that he simply features as much as possible.
This is a talented young player that needs minutes, after the lack of opportunities he had at Newcastle under Steve Bruce.
Hopefully he can keep making decisive contributions for Mansfield, so that he can place himself on Eddie Howe’s radar.
Newcastle will no doubt be busy in the next transfer window. But there’s an outside chance Longstaff could have a role to play next term.
