Newcastle United had to dig deep to grab a last-minute winner against Leicester City this past weekend. The 2-1 victory was another solid defensive display, and loan signing Matt Targett was the man who started the move for the decisive goal.
The left-back got ahead of James Justin, keeping the ball on the pitch in the Magpies’ half. He then played Joe Willock in down the line who crossed it into Bruno Guimaraes who headed home.
Targett has been one of Newcastle’s most consistent players since his arrival in January from Aston Villa. He spoke to The Chronicle on how the Toon’s defence played an important role in the win at St James’ Park.

“We defended really well as a team and were prepared to put in some last-ditch challenges,” he said.
“That’s what makes the difference at this stage of the season. We were brilliant and the mentality is right.”
Targett and Newcastle will look to add another home win under their belt against Crystal Palace
Whilst Newcastle came away with the three points against Leicester, it wasn’t a perfect performance. The Foxes will feel hard done by not to come away with more from the game.
At times the midfield did seem to be overrun. But the defence, as Targett previously stated, battled well and kept them in the game. However, they were undone by a set-piece routine that was put home by Ademola Lookman.

They host Crystal Palace tonight and Eddie Howe and his men will know they have a tough task ahead of them. Targett has been Howe’s go-to choice at left-back and that shouldn’t change.
The Villa loanee is extremely competent defensively. Furthermore, he’s tidy on the ball and is certainly Premier League quality.
As a position, left-back has been an area the Magpies have been lacking in for some time. Targett needs to be one of the first signings the club make in the summer window.
Newcastle has most likely secured safety in the Premier League, but they still have something to play for. The gap between mid-table and the top half is very tight. If they can string together more points from now until the end of the season they could finish as high as ninth.
