Mark Lawrenson fears for Newcastle boss after Chelsea sacking

Mark Lawrenson has told BBC Sport that Newcastle boss Steve Bruce could be in trouble now that ‘sacking season’ has started.

He made the claim during his weekly predictions piece ahead of tonight’s clash with Leeds United.

Newcastle face the Whites without a win in ten matches in all competitions.

The situation for Bruce is getting pretty desperate and he badly needs a result from somewhere.

Leeds go into tonight’s game without a win in three games, with one of those an embarrassing FA Cup exit at the hands of Crawley.

Lawrenson doesn’t think Bruce has long to turn things round and St James’ Park and backed the Magpies for a 2-0 defeat tonight.

He told BBC Sport: “Newcastle are in awful form – without a win in 10 games in all competitions, with seven defeats and only four goals in that period.

“If sacking season has started now, with Frank Lampard leaving Cheslea, then Steve Bruce is in trouble as Newcastle manager if this run continues.”

Time to deliver

Newcastle have seven more points than Fulham who occupy the final relegation place.

The Magpies aren’t what you’d consider perilous just yet, although they could do with turning their form around.

Bruce spent some decent money during the transfer window on Callum Wilson and Jamal Lewis.

One of his biggest issues this year has been an inability to get the best of Wilson in attack, with creativity a big concern.

Bruce would perhaps be wise to let the shackles off his team and go out tonight and attack Leeds.

They lost 5-2 to Marcelo Bielsa’s team in December so they should know what to expect from this evening’s clash.

On current form, they’ll be embroiled in a relegation battle pretty quickly but a couple of wins could change the landscape completely.

Tonight’s game looks like a sizeable one for Newcastle – and indeed for Bruce.
