Newcastle United are currently leading the chase for the Premier League’s top six.

While the two consecutive victories following the dismal loss to Crystal Palace late last month should be caveated in that they came against relegation-fodder in Sheffield United and Burnley, Eddie Howe’s side could be set for a strong finish.

Indeed, they lead Chelsea by two points and while Manchester United could move level on points should they beat Palace on Monday night, Newcastle have a much better goal difference.

In fact, Howe’s team may also be on course to finish inside the Premier League’s top five, with Tottenham seemingly in freefall and just four points ahead.

Newcastle’s next away game will no doubt be crucial in determining what, if any, European competition they will be playing in next season.

Though there is the small matter of hosting Brighton at St James’ Park this weekend, Howe then takes his side to Old Trafford in what could well be a play-off for the top six at the very least.

The Magpies have already beaten the Red Devils twice this season of course and their task may be somewhat simpler now amid bad news coming out of Erik ten Hag’s camp.

That’s because a Man United side already decimated by injuries have now confirmed that defender Harry Maguire will miss around a month of action.

Already without the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Raphael Varane, Luke Shaw and Victor Lindelof of late, Ten Hag’s defensive options look limited ahead of Newcastle’s visit on Wednesday 15 May, 2024.

“Harry Maguire has sustained a muscle injury that will keep him out for about three weeks,” read a statement from the Manchester giants.

After a difficult start to the season, the England international has established himself in Manchester again, making 31 appearances across all competitions. Maguire also ranks within the top five in their squad for interceptions (1.1), aerial duels won (3.1), clearances (3.8) and blocks (1.1) per game, according to WhoScored.

Newcastle simply have to win at Old Trafford

The fact that Newcastle have already beaten the Old Trafford giants twice will mean little if they lose when it really matters.

Get turned over by this Manchester United, one who have already conceded 25 times at home this season and the campaign is at risk of petering out. With Newcastle’s glut of attacking options, they should feel more than confident.
