Northern Ireland manager Michael O’Neill has confirmed that Newcastle United’s Jamal Lewis has aggravated a knee injury and has withdrawn from the squad.
It has been confirmed that Newcastle‘s Jamal Lewis has pulled out of Northern Ireland‘s squad for their upcoming Euro 2024 qualifiers after picking up another injury.
O’Neill said of Lewis (via Shields Gazette): “Unfortunately Jamal aggravated a knee injury earlier this week, so isn’t with us. Naturally with Shane Ferguson out as well, probably our two most prominent left-sided players are unavailable, but we’ve worked very hard in training. We had three really good days back in Belfast, and we think we’ve found a way to accommodate for that.”
Things just never fell in place for Lewis at Newcastle
The £15million signing from Norwich hasn’t exactly lived up to his price tag since he moved to Newcastle in the summer of 2020. Despite being regularly used early in that season his form never really wowed Newcastle fans.
Last season, Lewis spent the majority of the season injured and only made four appearances for the Magpies. He made as many appearances for his country as he did his club.

Lewis will be allowed to leave Newcastle this summer, but now we have to see how serious this latest injury is as it could have a massive bearing on whether any offers come in for the 25-year-old.
Eddie Howe has admitted Lewis faces an uncertain future
Eddie Howe recently admitted that Lewis’s future at the club is uncertain saying: “The future’s a little bit unclear for him. I’m very aware that I’ve not been able to give him the football that he wants this season.”

That’s unlikely to change next season, especially with Newcastle looking to add a new left-back to the side.
Lewis has two years left on his deal but It is definitely time for him to move on, for his own sake if nothing else, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Newcastle end up making a loss on this investment as I can’t see anyone coming in with more than £15million for him at this point.
