Newcastle United stunned Manchester United in a 1-0 win at St James’ Park this evening and the midfield performances of brothers Sean and Matty Longstaff have caught the eye of Man United fans.
Before the game, all eyes were on eldest Sean, as the midfielder was the subject of a rumoured move to The Red Devils earlier in the summer.
Most Man United fans weren’t impressed with the links at the time though, believing the inexperienced youngster was not worth a rumoured £40m asking price.
The move never materialised, yet the rumours still seemed to effect Longstaff, who has struggled so far this season.
But against Man United, perhaps with a point to prove, Longstaff seemed to return to his old self, especially in the first half.
Some Man United fans were quick to notice his ability to dictate a game, but they also had their eyes on another Newcastle star – his younger brother Matty, who completely stole the show.
Despite a few nervous passes in the opening minutes of his Premier League debut, the younger Longstaff slowly grew into the game and gradually gained confidence.
The teenager nearly opened the scoring in the first half with a ferocious volley, teeing himself up before hammering a strike off the bar.
In the second he also sent in a pinpoint cross to Andy Carroll, the target man unable to guide his header on target.
But in the 70th minute came his magic moment, a winning goal on his Premier League debut.
The youngster perfectly placed a low-driven strike from outside the box past David De Gea, finishing off a well worked move by Allan Saint-Maximin and Jetro Willems.
It was such an impressive debut that some Man United fans even suggested they’d been scouting the wrong Longstaff.
However it has to be said, a lot of their comments tonight seemed to be in despair at their own team rather than an appraisal of the Tyneside duo.
After all, Man United fans aren’t too used to their team being dominated by two little known local lads.
