Luke Edwards offers insight into Eddie Howe’s future at Newcastle

A frustrating season for Newcastle United continues.

As has been the case for much of the campaign thus far, a lack of consistency came back to bite Newcastle.

Only days after claiming an impressive 3-3 draw against Premier League leaders Liverpool, Eddie Howe’s side capitulated at Brentford.

Indeed, they fell to a 4-2 defeat in west London and the fallout has been rather dramatic.

Eddie Howe, after all, claimed his side would “cringe” at their defending. Bruno Guimaraes, meanwhile, admitted the team’s structure had become a “mess”.

Alan Shearer even labelled Howe’s side as “hopeless”.

Still, perhaps the most concerning aspect of it all is the fact the Newcastle United manager appeared to seriously question the attitude of his players. Across his three years in charge of the club, it is difficult to ever remember that happening before.

Naturally, the pressure will soon grow. While there is no suggestion Howe is under any pressure from owners PIF, supporters will not be happy at how frustrating this season has been.

Where the injury crisis and the fact Newcastle had an intense schedule offered some kind of excuse for what happened last season, those arguments can no longer be made.

Though no one supporter speaks for the fanbase as a whole, it would not be ridiculous to question where Newcastle are going under Howe and if – at some point – they might need a new manager.

Interestingly, Luke Edwards offered an update.

One supporter replied to Edwards on social media platform X with the message “Howe has to go”.

In reply, Edwards said: “He won’t be going.”

Eddie Howe deserves time under PIF – but questions need to be asked

Howe has been dealt a difficult hand this season after a dreadful summer transfer window in which his squad wasn’t really strengthened. Broadly, he’s dealt with that very well.

While not to say he’s beyond reproach, he does deserve time to turn things around.

Still, at some point, questions do need to be asked. Being so wildly inconsistent just does not seem sustainable.
