Newcastle United star Sandro Tonali is enjoying quite the return to action.

The midfielder is available again after a ten-month ban from football due to a betting scandal and the early signs are very promising indeed.

Tonali has impressed for Newcastle since his return, delighting sections of the support with his outing at Nottingham Forest in the Carabao Cup before impressing Eddie Howe during a cameo in the win over Tottenham before the international break.

The 24-year-old then starred for Italy in the Nations League on Friday night. Manager Luciano Spalletti spoke highly of his performance against France, with the former AC Milan star providing a glorious assist for teammate Federico Dimarco.

Now, Spalletti has opened up on how Tonali is feeling following his return to the international stage.

Italy manager Luciano Spalletti shares update on Newcastle star Sandro Tonali

Speaking ahead of their Nations League game against Israel on Monday, Spalletti said (via Gianluca Di Marzio): “After his return we were all open-armed to welcome him. Given his qualities, he is an important player, he is very eager to show his qualities as a footballer” .

Eddie Howe was so right about Sandro Tonali

Even before his return to action, Howe was hailing Tonali’s performances in training.

Clearly, actually translating that to life in the Premier League and on the international stage is another thing entirely but the early signs are very promising indeed.

Tonali will be tested as the season progresses, there’s little doubt about that. Still, we can only judge him from what he’s done thus far and everything is going to plan at this very early stage.

Newcastle spent big on Tonali last summer and did not see any immediate results. If he can continue on his upward trajectory,  perhaps the money shelled out on him will start to look like something of a bargain.

He’s eager to get his career back on track and the results could be brilliant news for both Italy and Newcastle.
