Sean Longstaff playing well is becoming par for the course.

Despite Mo Diame and Ki Sung-Yueng returning to fitness, Rafa Benitez kept faith with the youngster against Wolves.

Longstaff once again started alongside Isaac Hayden, with his partner getting his first goal of the season.

But it was the 21-year-old who truly stole the show. He was named the man of the match, and received praise from some legends of the game.

Longstaff catches Lineker and Shearer’s attention

And the former England striker was impressed with Newcastle’s number 36, heralding the impact of another young English player in the top flight.

High praise indeed. And this inspired a response from Alan Shearer, who also paid tribute to Longstaff.

While Lineker’s words were very complimentary, the response from Shearer will mean much more. Longstaff probably grew up idolising the former number nine, now he’s the one performing in the black and white stripes of Newcastle. Or blue as it was on Monday night…

The local lad deserves all the praise he gets. At Molineux he was sensational, up against top players in Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho. But he was unfazed, breaking up play expertly and then using the ball when he got it.

Having made his debut on Boxing Day, Longstaff already looks like a player who cannot be dropped.
