Things are starting to heat up in the pursuit of James Maddison with Tottenham and Liverpool now declaring an interest in the Leicester City playmaker who is being chased by Newcastle United.
It was recently reported that Daniel Levy was a big admirer of James Maddison and was keen to bring him to Tottenham, even though they don’t even have a manger in place right now. Now it seems Liverpool are also tracking the England international according to a report in 90mins.
The report claims that Tottenham and Liverpool have reached out to Maddison’s representatives about a summer move as the star looks set to leave Leicester City at the end of the season with just a year left on his current deal.
It has been reported that Leicester want £50million for Maddison
90mins echoed the reports in The Telegraph that Leicester would be looking for £50million in return for Maddison. That report also claims that Tottenham are leading the chase to land Maddison, but I’m not sure that really adds up.
Newcastle are a team on the up, currently sitting in third place in the Premier League and are looking increasingly likely to be playing Champions League football next season. Meanwhile, Spurs can’t put a run of form together this season and are falling away in the race for Champions League qualification. They currently don’t have a manager in place, their Director of Football has been given a worldwide ban. Other than being in London, what’s the appeal of going to Tottenham?
Liverpool … I don’t even know what’s happening at Liverpool. Sitting eighth in the league they went from hammering Manchester United 7-0 one week to getting beat off relegation favourites Bournemouth the next. They could miss out on European football completely next season.
Out of Newcastle, Tottenham and Liverpool there’s only one clear winner
Newcastle has to be the best option for any player with ambition, surely? Which is why, if he does end up going to one of the aforementioned clubs, it will speak volumes about his character and we could rest easy knowing we’d dodged a bullet.
I doubt that will be the case though, I still remain confident that a deal is closer than we know. It’s just wishful thinking on my part, I don’t have any insider knowledge, I just can’t shake the feeling that Maddison has had his heart set on Newcastle for a while and our success this season is just reaffirming that desire.
Newcastle offered had a £50million bid turned down for Maddison last summer when Leicester were holding out for closer to £60million. I don’t see it being too much of an issue for them to offer that again to see off the challenge from Liverpool and Tottenham.
