Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are battling it out to sign James Maddison this summer, but both sides are being frustrated by the seller.
Leicester City have found themselves in an impossible position. They have been relegated from the Premier League to the Championship, while Maddison is entering the final year of his contract at the King Power Stadium.
He wants to leave the Foxes, and they need to sell now to ensure they don’t lose him for nothing next summer. However, Leicester are currently refusing to budge on their asking price as it stands.
Newcastle unwilling to meet Leicester’s James Maddison asking price
According to 90min, Leicester want £60million for Maddison.
They state that they are not actively looking to sell Maddison at this moment in time, and are hoping that other clubs will enter the race to sign him during this summer’s transfer window.
It is a risky strategy, and the report from 90min adds that the Magpies are reluctant to pay that much money for the England international.
Newcastle’s stance is correct, as there is no way Maddison is worth the same amount as he was last summer. His contract is entering its final 12 months, and Leicester are in a much weaker position following their relegation.
They need to sell, yet appear to be pricing the ‘exceptional‘ 26-year-old out of a move away at this moment in time.
For £60million, Newcastle may as well focus their attentions on Dominik Szoboszlai, who is available for that amount and is four years younger than Maddison.
There is a lot of noise surrounding Maddison at the moment. One minute Newcastle are the favourites, the next it is Tottenham. Now this report suggests that neither side is in pole position, with Leicester unwilling to let him go for less than £60million, which is way too expensive.
