Kyle Walker says forgotten Newcastle United entertainer was the ‘best player’ whenever he joined in training

When Kevin Keegan became Newcastle United manager, he brought an attractive style of football with him.

As a player, he lit up the pitch with his unbelievable ability and goalscoring prowess. Then, Kevin Keegan made a triumphant return to Newcastle United in 1992 to claw the club away from relegation to the third tier of English football to coming agonisingly close to winning the Premier League title.

Keegan’s attacking style of football earned his Newcastle side the nickname of “The Entertainers”, known for high-scoring games with players like Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand and Alan Shearer, just three of the many names who were part of that team.

However, things came crashing down at the end of the 1995/96 season when Keegan’s famous ‘I would love it’ rant was born. After those words, David Ginola revealed that he knew Newcastle had lost the title race.

While a lot of the focus of Keegan’s reign was on that season, there was one player who spent two years at the Magpies who former Manchester City defender Kyle Walker claimed was unbelievable whenever he joined in with training.

Kyle Walker on forgotten Newcastle United ace Scott Sellars

Many younger fans will not remember Scott Sellars, but the 59-year-old had a two-year stint at Newcastle under Keegan between 1993 and 1995.

The midfielder joined Newcastle while they were in Division One (now the Championship), helping the club return to the top-flight a year later. In April 1994, Sellars scored the only goal in a win against Sunderland to move them within one point of promotion to the Premier League.

There is no doubt that Sellars is a forgotten figure amongst the other entertainers during Keegan’s time at the club, but he was a key part of the team for the time he was there.

Sellars played 75 games across three seasons for the Magpies before moving to Bolton Wanderers. After retiring from playing professional football, Sellars became an under-18s coach for Sheffield United, where he helped a young Walker develop before he made moves to clubs like Man City and Tottenham.

During a recent episode of the Kyle Walker Podcast, the AC Milan star shared that Sellars used to join in with training at Sheffield United.

“At youth level, Scott Sellars, the winger that played for Newcastle. He used to join in but he was the best player in the youth team when he used to play.” Walker said.

Sellars spent five years as an academy coach at Man City before becoming head of academy at Wolves in 2019, where he remains today.

Newcastle United ace had a bizarre career before football

While Sellars continued working in football after his playing days, others have taken different routes.

Philippe Albert became a greengrocer after returning from football at the age of 30. The Belgian spent over a decade in that role before returning to football punditry.

Before his playing career, Shaka Hislop worked for NASA ahead of a move to Newcastle. The former Toon shot-stopper now works for ESPN and regularly talks about Newcastle.

Even players who are yet to retire have gone on to make bizarre moves just because they can. Most recently, Andy Carroll joined French fourth-tier side Bordeaux for the 2024/25 season and is now enjoying life away from the English game.

Carroll still speaks to current Newcastle players, he revealed in a recent interview that they all speak very highly of Eddie Howe.
