Newcastle United impressed last night with a 3-1 win over fellow relegation rivals Everton. Kieran Trippier once again was an outstanding performer in black and white. Eddie Howe will have been impressed with the way his side approached the game.

Allan Saint-Maximin was given the man of the match by BT Sport and was a joy to watch visually. However, the man who arrived from Atletico Madrid in January displayed why he’s the best player on Tyneside.

Trippier put home a wonderful free-kick past Jordan Pickford to secure all 3 points. But it wasn’t just the goal that showed Trippier’s quality, it was his all-around game.

It’s still surreal to see Trippier playing at St James’ Park

About a month ago the 31-year-old put pen to paper and completed the move to the Toon. It still feels totally surreal seeing him start for Newcastle.

Yesterday’s performance against Everton was outstanding from him. Not only did he net the third goal, but you can see as a footballer, he’s a cut above the rest. His passing range is first-class, only once can I actually recall him misplacing a pass or a set-piece.

Additionally, his work defensively was great. Dealing with Andros Townsend is no easy job, but he tackled and covered him very well. Furthermore, he’s the one to organise and communicate the defensive structure of the back four. The Magpies’ defence seems to be reaching a turning point.

Also, the way Trippier controls and brings down the ball is something none of the rest of the team can do. He’s able to do it with such ease and do it every single time. It’s no wonder he’s reached the Champions League and Euros finals with Tottenham and England.

The shift put in by Trippier against Everton shows that he’s just a cut above the rest. His defending, passing, control and overall play is amazing to watch. He’s already making a case to be the best right-back to play for the Toon. Warren Barton and Mathieu Debuchy are the only other players who make a real case.

While Saint-Maximin deservedly got praise for being so pleasing on the eye with his speed and footwork, Trippier showed he’s still a top player. The goal was just the icing on the cake of a great performance. So far it’s definitely his best in a Newcastle shirt, hopefully, there’s more to come.
