Kieran Trippier admits that Newcastle United fans have surprised him

Kieran Trippier has admitted that he has blown away by just how ‘mad’ Newcastle United supporters are.

The right-back joined the club at the start of the year, signing for £12million from Atletico Madrid back in January.

He was a statement signing – the first made by the new owners. To see him swap Champions League football for a relegation battle was a real shock, but so far the move couldn’t have gone much better.

2022 has been a year to remember for Toon fans, and it has seen Trippier become a hero at St James’ Park. His trademark free-kicks have been magical, while his overall performances have been exceptional.

The 32-year-old is a key reason why we are where we are right now, and why the atmosphere inside SJP is absolutely electric.

Newcastle supporters have got a great reputation for being so passionate, but Trippier has admitted that he didn’t think it would be as ‘mad’ as it is.

Trippier on Newcastle fans

Newcastle’s number two has appeared on the Under The Cosh podcast. He was asked if he was surprised by ‘how mad’ the Newcastle supporters are.

“Yeah, definitely,” he said.

“You have always noticed Newcastle fans. I’ve played at St James’ loads of times and it’s a tough place to come but I am definitely surprised by how passionate they are and the support home and away is mad. It’s mad.”

Trippier surprised by the fans, and the fans are surprised by Trippier

During his time with Newcastle, Trippier hasn’t experienced too many bad days – especially at home.

Even his debut in the cup was a sellout, despite losing in embarrassing fashion to Cambridge United.

The atmosphere home and away has been amazing, and it is giving the players even more encouragement to push even harder.

But while Trippier has been surprised by the fans, there are probably some supporters who have been surprised by him.

We all knew he was good, but I don’t think anyone expected him to be this good. His level of performance is obscene, putting in 8/10s pretty much every week.

Everything Trippier does just oozes class. You could see as soon as he arrived that he was a class above with his touches. But rather than drop his standard, he has made those around him better.

While there was surprise at the beginning, we all know how good Trippier is now. And he knows exactly how passionate the Newcastle United fans are.
