Newcastle United’s financial troubles could be solved by the latest news that Dan Ashworth is headed to Man United for a significant fee.
Everybody knows by now that Newcastle are very restricted in what they can spend thanks to FFP, but their latest demand of £20m for Ashworth could solve some of their problems.
It was expected that at some point Newcastle would have to sell a star player, but Sky Sports’ Keith Downie claimed on United View that the £20m would save them from selling Bruno Guimaraes or Joelinton.
Ashworth saves Newcastle a heart-breaking sale
Newcastle’s CEO Darren Eales gave an interview in January that pretty much confirmed what supporters had been fearing, and that is that the club will be forced to sell players if they want to bring new ones in the summer.
The three names that are so often suggested are Bruno, Sven Botman and Alexander Isak as they are the most valuable assets Newcastle have and would garner the greatest fees.
However, that would just feel like a huge step backwards and not at all like Newcastle were moving forwards with the team and improving the squad.
There are other options with Callum Wilson and Miguel Almiron potentially being moved on in the summer, but Downie claims that this Ashworth sale could solve Newcastle’s tricky situation.

Newcastle need all of their star players to progress
Newcastle will of course need to sell players in the future if they are to have funds to reinvest into other areas of the squad, but right now the best thing they can do is to hold on to those top quality players.
We do see big teams like Man City and Liverpool selling some top players to other clubs, but they have the squads to deal with that which is something Newcastle can not yet say given their lack of depth.
It’s so important that Newcastle find a way around this issue as losing one of the three aforementioned stars would be a big blow and it’s very likely they’d spend even more money trying to replace them anyway.
What will be another huge factor is finding the right candidate to replace Ashworth so that Newcastle con continue their progression and look for young promising talents who could perhaps be moved on for a fee in the future, solving their FFP problems.
