Keep, sell, loan: Predicting what will happen to Newcastle United’s squad

The Newcastle United squad could receive a facelift this summer, as the club looks to kick on after a rollercoaster of a season.

There will be plenty of new arrivals, but some players must also be moved on. Meanwhile, others will spend the season away on loan.

With that in mind, we’re going to look at every member of Eddie Howe’s Newcastle squad and predict what will happen to them this summer…

Martin Dubravka – Keep

Whether Newcastle sign a goalkeeper or not this summer, Dubravka has to stay. He will compete with whoever arrives for the number one jersey.

Ciaran Clark – Loan

Going in to the final year of his Toon contract so may favour seeing that deal out. Therefore, a move away on loan feels most likely.

Paul Dummett – Keep

Recently signed a contract extension to keep him at St James’ Park.

Fabian Schar – Keep

Another player who has recently extended his stay at SJP. He’s a key player.

Jamaal Lascelles – Keep

At risk of leaving this summer, and there will no doubt be speculation over a move back to Nottingham Forest now they’ve achieved promotion. However, we expect Lascelles to stay at Newcastle and offer squad depth.

Joelinton – Keep

Saved his Toon career this season and will absolutely stay.

Jonjo Shelvey – Keep

Should remain a Newcastle player, but his future may come into question if a new contract isn’t agreed. His current deal expires in 2023.

Callum Wilson – Keep

Our top scorer is going nowhere, even if a new striker joins the Magpies.

Allan Saint-Maximin – Keep

Linked with a £50million move to Spurs, but selling Allan Saint-Maximin would surely be a huge mistake.

Matt Ritchie – Sell

He’s barely featured in 2022 and needs to get minutes elsewhere. He’s been linked with a move back to Bournemouth, which would keep him in the Premier League.

Jamal Lewis – Loan

Despite talk of a fresh chance at SJP, a loan move feels more likely for Lewis. He would really need to excel in pre-season to force his way back into Howe’s plans.

Isaac Hayden – Sell

The midfielder has already hinted at a move away on social media. He’s probably one of our more sellable assets out of the players who are likely to leave.

Kieran Trippier – Keep

This one’s obvious. He’s only just got here.

Jeff Hendrick – Loan

Newcastle struggled to get players off the books in January, and could have a similar issue this summer. Some may only depart on loan, including Hendrick.

Emil Krafth – Keep

Proven himself to be a solid backup option for Trippier. Deserves to stay.

Federico Fernandez – Sell

Fernandez feels nailed on to leave given he’s barely played for the club since Howe was appointed. A solid player who will be remembered fondly.

Javi Manquillo – Keep

With the ability to play on the left or right of defence, his versatility will keep him in the North East.

Chris Wood – Keep

His goal return isn’t great, but Chris Wood will be a great backup option next season. He offers something different.

Ryan Fraser – Keep

Improved massively under Howe and will hope to be a starter once again in the 22/23 campaign.

Jacob Murphy – Keep

Howe seems to be a fan of Murphy, so will likely keep the winger for now.

Miguel Almiron – Keep

This is the one I’m least sure about. If another wide midfielder arrive, perhaps someone will have to leave, and Miggy feels the most likely. But his improvement late in the season might hand him a Toon lifeline.

Karl Darlow – Sell

This depends on a new goalkeeper arriving, which feels very likely. Darlow deserves to be a number one keeper, but it won’t be at Newcastle. His ‘terrific‘ performances last season should hopefully earn him a Premier League move.

Freddie Woodman – Sell

Once tipped to be the Magpies’ first choice goalkeeper, this summer feels like the right time to cash in on Freddie Woodman.

Joe Willock – Keep

An impressive 2022 means there’s no way Joe Willock will leave. He’s a player who should only get better for the Magpies.

Dan Burn – Keep

Great start to life at St James’ Park. Going nowhere.

Dwight Gayle – Sell

Simply put, Dwight Gayle needs to go and get minutes somewhere else. He should have Championship clubs queueing up for his signature, such is his ability in the second tier.

Sean Longstaff – Keep

Just signed a new contract and proved at the end of the season that he can play a part in Howe’s midfield.

Bruno Guimaraes – Keep

Why would you sell your best player? The Mike Ashley era is over.

Mark Gillespie – Keep

A decent option to have as a backup goalkeeper.

Dan Langley – Keep

See above.

Lucas de Bolle – Loan

Flirted with the first-team earlier in the season, but needs senior minutes under his belt.

Elliot Anderson – Loan

Exceptional in League Two with Bristol Rovers. Now is the time for him to step up to the Championship.

Matty Longstaff – Loan

While his brother is staying put, Matty probably needs another loan, ideally further up the Football League ladder.

Kelland Watts – Loan

Should seek a temporary move back to Wigan after helping the Latics return to the Championship.

Joe White – Loan

Like the four players above, needs experience out on loan to continue his development.
