Karl Darlow ended his nine year tenure at Newcastle United at the weekend when he joined Leeds United for an undisclosed fee.

There had been several Championship clubs interested in Newcastle ‘keeper Karl Darlow this summer along with Bournemouth in the Premier League but the 32-year-old finally opted to join Leeds to help them return to the top-flight at the first time of asking.

The move brings an end to nine years on the books at Newcastle for Darlow after he joined the club, along with Jamaal Lascelles, from Nottingham Forest.

Darlow found himself in and out of the first team quite often at Newcastle as he saw various managers come and go. His best season for the Magpies was in 2016/17 when he played 34 games in the Championship and was integral to the side that gained promotion by winning the league.

No doubt Darlow will be hoping to replicate that feat with his new club next season.

Following his move, Karl Darlow has praised the Newcastle fans. When the Yorkshire Post asked him if playing at a packed Elland Road excites him, he said: “Absolutely, especially when you see how passionate they are. I have just come from one club that are very, very passionate about their football to another so it’s something that I am used to and something that I am excited to carry on throughout my career.”

Leeds can be confident they’ve got themselves a bargain with Darlow

If the reports are true that Leeds snapped up Darlow for just £400,000 then they have got themselves one of the bargains of the summer.

Maybe Newcastle let them take Darlow for such a low fee to grease the wheels for a move for Wilfried Gnonto? It’s highly unlikely, but it would be nice.

Darlow’s transfer leaves Newcastle with Nick Pope and Martin Dubravka as the main two goalkeepers, backed up by Loris Karius and Mark Gillespie.
