As Newcastle United prepare for their next game, the loss to Liverpool on Sunday still stings.
It is one of those defeats that will sting for a while. It is a match that has meant more over the past 12 months, and it is a fixture that we have notoriously struggled in. After Sunday, Newcastle are now 14 games without a win against Liverpool.
It did feel like Sunday was going to buck the trend. We were 1-0 up against 10 men, on course for a famous victory against a side we were really keen to get one over on.
But then the collapse happened. Newcastle did not take their chances and were punished, with Darwin Nunez scoring two late goals to win it for the Reds.
It was absolutely heartbreaking for the Toon Army, who are finding it difficult to process the defeat. And it sounds like the feeling could be the same inside the dressing room.

How Newcastle dressing room felt after late loss to Liverpool
The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has appeared on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne, and shared what a dressing room source told him after the Liverpool game.
“I exchanged messages with a few people inside the dressing room, a couple of whom referred to – basically along the lines of ‘it’s difficult to lose, especially to them’,” he said.
“It’s this thing with Liverpool, it’s everything that’s around it. Howe was asked about this in his pre-match press conference, why does it seem like there’s tension between the clubs. In a very Eddie Howe way he was like ‘is there?’ and there is definite needle there. We know how frustrating they find Jurgen Klopp and his little digs.”
Liverpool will rub this in our faces until we meet again
There is a real edge between Newcastle and Liverpool now after what happened at Anfield last season. There was a major altercation between the two benches, while there was a huge debate about timewasting.

On that night, Liverpool snatched a late winner. And in the reverse fixture, Newcastle were unable to get revenge following an early red card for Nick Pope.
Sunday felt like a perfect storm. There was even more incentive to win, and Newcastle actually went into the game as favourites.
But we threw it away, and handed Liverpool a win that they will rub in our faces until the next time we meet.
