It’d be fair to say it’s been an underwhelming start to the season for Newcastle United.
While some context must be applied in the fact Newcastle have come up against Manchester City, Liverpool and Brighton in their opening four games, heading into the first international break of the season off the back of three losses was not exactly in the plan.
There have been some positives, however.

Indeed, the form of Anthony Gordon has been very promising. Tipped for a much better time of things after a pre-season by Eddie Howe, the £40m star has impressed during the start of his first full campaign.
Now, some insight from behind the scenes has emerged.
What Eddie Howe thinks of Anthony Gordon’s form at Newcastle
Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Sky Sports journalist Keith Downie has shared some of Howe’s feelings towards the former Everton star.
Though the team as a whole is not functioning as well as last season, the 22-year-old himself is seemingly in the good books.
“He’s beginning to look at home in a Newcastle shirt, and no performance said that more than against Liverpool a few weeks ago,” he said.
“The way he took the goal. Beside from that, he looked dangerous every time he went up against Trent Alexander-Arnold, every time he cut in from the left-hand side. Could have had another goal or two, setting up the sending off for Virgil van Dijk on Alexander Isak. It was Gordon’s through ball, cutting off the left touch line and playing a nice through ball that made [Virgil] van Dijk lunge in. He just looks really suited to Newcastle United and the way they play football.
“So much so that I think Harvey Barnes is going to have a tough time getting into the team. Gordon looks every bit an Eddie Howe player at the moment, and I know for a fact that he’s really pleased with the output he’s had from him in the first four games of the season.”

Harvey Barnes might face a fight to start
With Howe seemingly so pleased with Gordon, it leaves Harvey Barnes in an interesting position.
The forward is yet to claim a starting berth and though there’s still plenty of time to do so, Gordon’s form makes his task even harder.
Perhaps Gordon could switch over to the right flank, allowing Barnes in on the left, but that may impact the former’s performance.
As one of few Newcastle bright sparks during the opening stages of the season, that feels like a risk.
