The January transfer window is edging closer, leading to speculation over how many signings Newcastle United will make.

The Magpies are enjoying a sensational season so far. After 15 games, Eddie Howe’s side are third in the Premier League table.

European qualification is certainly a possibility, while some are even claiming that we could stay in the top four and return to the Champions League.

That still feels like it is a long way away, but it is the owners’ ambitions to take Newcastle to the top of the footballing pyramid.

They never expected it to happen in a couple of years, but Howe’s remarkable work has got fans dreaming of possible Champions League qualification.

Newcastle are in an excellent position heading into January, and there is a belief that extra reinforcements could give the club the push they need to stay in the top four.

But will Sporting Director Dan Ashworth be active when the transfer market opens? Give Me Sport’s Dean Jones certainly thinks so.

Jones thinks Newcastle will make two signings in January

Jones has been speaking to Give Me Sport, and given his thoughts on Newcastle possibly dipping into the transfer market once again when January rolls around.

He thinks PIF will back Howe, as he looks to do the impossible and qualify for the Champions League.

“To be in a Champions League position right now rather than just chasing a Champions League position is probably beyond expectation,” he said.

“And knowing that you’re almost halfway through a season and you’ve just got to go through that again means they probably will hammer home the message that they are serious contenders for Champions League football.

“I think they will put their hands in their pockets again and that they will make two serious signings.”

Reports suggest otherwise

While Jones might think the Newcastle owners will splash out on another couple of ‘serious’ signings in January, reports from elsewhere suggest different.

The Telegraph have recently reported that PIF will not be spending big money during the January transfer window. Instead, the next big spend will be saved for next summer.

You would be more inclined to believe the Telegraph’s report, but you never know with these owners. There was talk all summer of Newcastle not having too much money left to spend, then they went and broke their transfer record on Alexander Isak.

However, it would still be a real shock to see the owners spend big money on two players in January. If the right deal becomes available then surely one is a possibility, but two feels like a stretch.

In reality, it could be a quiet January for Newcastle, but that’s fine. We are being linked with the likes of Maximo Perrone and Andrey Santos, and young signings like them are what we need. The club will continue to plan for longevity in the future, even if the present is brighter than anyone anticipated it would be.
