Daily Mail journalist Craig Hope has made an intriguing claim about Newcastle and their interest in Paulo Fonseca live on TalkSPORT.

The Newcastle United correspondent was on the show to discuss this morning’s departure of Steve Bruce.

PIF handed the 60-year-old his papers this morning ending an association with the club that stretched over two years.

Now, attention will turn to the next manager. Graeme Jones will take charge in the interim, alongside Bruce’s coaching staff.

Several names have cropped up since the takeover was completed a fortnight ago.

Jim White quizzed Hope on who he thought might be the next manager live on TalkSPORT.

The journalist claimed: “There’s a few names been mentioned. I do know that Newcastle have crunched numbers with Paulo Fonseca so that’s one to watch.”

Fonseca has been out of work since leaving Roma at the end of last season. He left the Serie A outfit with a 51.9% win ratio, winning 53 of his 102 matches in charge.

He has also managed several clubs in Portugal and also won 103 of 139 games in charge of Shakhtar Donetsk.

Fonseca was almost appointed by Tottenham in the summer, although sporting director Fabi Paratici had a late change of heart.

Exciting: Fonseca could prove brilliant Newcastle appointment

This would certainly get the juices flowing for Newcastle fans. Fonseca has a decent pedigree and given his desire to join Tottenham, he’d likely relish the move to Newcastle.

Whoever gets the job has a pretty simple short-term remit. Wins are required to lift Newcastle out of the relegation zone and steer them to safety.

Fonseca has a decent reputation in the game and that could bode well for the January transfer window. He’d likely attract some decent players to give the club a big lift.

Crucially, the 48-year-old plays an attacking brand of football and that would delight the Newcastle fan base.
