Journalist claims Newcastle are confident they can sign two more players

Newcastle United need to sign at least two more players this summer, and the belief inside the club is that they can.

That’s according to the Athletic’s Chris Waugh, who has addressed the current situation surrounding incomings at St James’ Park on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.

The Magpies started the summer in impressive fashion, bringing in Matt Targett, Nick Pope and Sven Botman. We made three additions that will stop us conceding as many goals, but now we need signings who can score them.

Attacking reinforcements have proven much harder to come by, with multiple targets either proving too expensive or moving elsewhere.

Newcastle started the new season brilliantly, beating Nottingham Forest 2-0. The result and performance buoyed supporters, who were briefly able to just focus on football rather than comings and goings.

But with the transfer window edging closer to its end, Dan Ashworth and co need to get a move on and bring in the players Eddie Howe needs.

And the belief is that they will be able to do that.

Waugh on how Newcastle feel about making more signings

The Athletic’s Chris Waugh has spoke about Newcastle’s recent transfer struggles on the latest episode of Pod On The Tyne.

“They are actively working,” he said.

“Dan Ashworth is actively working on that front, and there is still a confidence they will bring in a couple of players between now and the end of the window.”

Waugh also stated that he believes the Magpies will likely make one permanent signing before turning to the loan market.

Newcastle need at least two more players

If Newcastle end the summer with anything less than two more new signings then fans will be slightly worried.

We definitely need a striker who can act as backup and potentially even challenge Callum Wilson. Chris Wood has struggled for goals in a Toon shirt, while we have also seen Dwight Gayle leave the club.

The other position that certainly needs strengthening is the right of midfield. Howe has three players who can play on that flank, but they all offer degrees of inconsistency.

Newcastle need to be more creative in the final third, while Howe needs more options to choose from. Forest frustrated Newcastle a lot on Saturday, but we didn’t have any real stellar alternatives to change things from the bench.

And with Jonjo Shelvey now out for the first half of the season, it could be argued that we need a centre-midfielder as well.

But a winger and a striker remains the priority, and Newcastle are seemingly confident that two more players will sign on the dotted line before the transfer window closes. Let’s hope that confidence isn’t misplaced.
