Journalist believes Chris Wilder would want Newcastle job

Chris Wilder would be interested in the Newcastle United first-team manager’s job.

That is the view of Sky journalist Alan Biggs, who is also a columnist for the Sheffield Star.

Wilder has been unattached since leaving Sheffield United earlier this month.

The football community is waiting to see what his next job will be.

His brilliant work with the Blades, which involved taking them to the Premier League from League One, will likely mean he will not be out of work for very long.

Recently, some fans have suggested that Newcastle should be looking at replacing Steve Bruce with Wilder.

Apparently, the Magpies were looking at him before making Bruce manager in the summer of 2019 (The Athletic).

According to Biggs, Wilder would likely be keen if there was a vacancy.

He told talkSPORT: “He’s been linked with Celtic but I can’t see that one. What I do see is either West Brom or Newcastle for sure.

“I do know that in 2019 following Sheffield United’s promotion, Newcastle investigated the possibility of recruiting him but he stayed loyal and wanted to manage his team in the top-flight.

“I think it would appeal to him but I’m not speaking with any sort of knowledge of having discussed it with him but I think it would.”

One thing Biggs does know is that Wilder is currently taking a short break from the game, as he considers his next move.

Newcastle stuck with Bruce

At this point, Newcastle fans will have to accept Bruce staying on until the end of the season.

Unless Tottenham Hotspur ruthlessly tear Newcastle apart after the international break and something finally clicks for Mike Ashley, it just doesn’t look like he’ll be going anywhere.

The clear course of action was to sack Bruce weeks ago, or at least when Wilder left Sheffield United.

The 53-year-old would, hypothetically, be a brilliant appointment for Newcastle, and it’s a crying shame he likely won’t be pursued before someone else snaps him up.
