There were tears when one Spaniard left Newcastle this summer.

But while Rafa Benitez’s departure was a disaster, there weren’t too many fans frowning when it was confirmed Joselu was on his way out.

The striker is now back in his native Spain, playing for La Liga side Alaves. He cost them £2.5 million, half of what Newcastle paid in 2017.

Joselu arrived from Stoke as the Magpies looked for extra goals on their return to the Premier League. Sadly, that wasn’t how it played out.

During two seasons at St James’ Park, he managed just six goals in 49 appearances. And unfortunately he didn’t bring much else to the party.

Joselu worked hard but he wasn’t quick. The things he would try wouldn’t come off, and after a while fans grew tired. They accepted the fact that if he was on the pitch, we were less likely to score.

So now that he’s no longer our problem, how are Alaves coping? Well, very well in fact. Joselu is now a goal machine…sort of.

He’s played three La Liga games and amazingly has two goals to his name. The only game in which he didn’t score was when he came off the bench against Espanyol.

It’s a bit hard to believe. The lad was pretty useless at times in black and white, but seems to be much more comfortable back in Spain. As a reference, he’s score double the amount that club record signing Joelinton has this season.

Fair play to him. Joselu seemed like a nice bloke who just wasn’t good enough for Newcastle at the time. But are we ruing his exit? Absolutely not.
