Jose Enrique suggests Newcastle should sign someone 'bigger' than Matt Targett

Newcastle United signed Matt Targett in January, and they’ll be hoping to sign him again in the summer.

The left-back joined the Magpies on loan from Aston Villa, arriving on deadline day on a deal until the end of the season.

Targett has already impressed at St James’ Park, leading to calls from fans for the 26-year-old to be signed permanently.

That might be easier than first thought, as Newcastle have reportedly already agreed a deal in principle with Aston Villa.

That’s according to the Chronicle, who claim Newcastle can sign Targett for £15million.

He’s excelled since his move to the North East, proving to be one of our best left-backs in years. And a man who knows a thing or two about playing left-back for Newcastle is Jose Enrique.

The Spaniard has recently spoke to the Chronicle, and given his reaction to claims Targett could become a permanent Magpie.

Jose Enrique suggests Newcastle should sign another left-back alongside Matt Targett

“It’s a lot of money, people talk about £15million [for Targett] like it’s nothing but it is a lot of money,” Enrique told the Chronicle.

“Obviously, if that’s what Newcastle want then they can afford it with these owners.

“But, maybe they can afford something bigger in the summer. You don’t know, they’ve signed [Kieran] Trippier on the right side. With all of my respect to Matty, obviously he is not Trippier. That’s the reality.

“He is a very good player and I really like him. It could be an option to sign him, but it could also be an option to sign someone bigger as well, and have two very good options at left-back.”

Targett is the man Newcastle need this summer

Newcastle can probably land someone bigger than Targett this summer. But that doesn’t necessarily mean they should.

It has been reported that the Toon owners are eyeing quality, not quantity in the transfer market. There won’t be a ridiculous budget.

With that in mind, Targett is absolutely the man Newcastle need. He’s already proven that he suits Eddie Howe’s style of play – I don’t think he’s put a foot wrong since joining the club.

And at £15million he isn’t going to take up too much of the budget. That will allow Howe to boost his squad in more pressing areas.

With the way Targett is playing, finding an improvement shouldn’t be a priority for Newcastle. He’s the man they need.
