Newcastle United’s links with John Swift make perfect sense for one reason – opinion

Newcastle United are reportedly keeping tabs on Reading midfielder John Swift.

That’s according to Football League World, who claim multiple clubs are keeping an eye on the 26-year-old.

Swift has had a wonderful start to the season with the Royals, finding the net seven times to make him the Championship’s leading scorer so far.

He’s a product of Chelsea’s academy, but only managed one Premier League appearance during his time at Stamford Bridge. That was a cameo off the bench in 2014, replacing Eden Hazard in the 89th minute.

To this day, that is his only top flight appearance. But his impressive form in the second tier has reportedly caught the eyes of Brentford and Aston Villa, as well as the Magpies. FLW claim that Sheffield United are also keen.

Only one reason why Newcastle would want John Swift

Newcastle had a shocking transfer window this summer, only signing one first-team player. That was Joe Willock, who had been at the club last season on loan.

Steve Bruce wanted more players, but the club reportedly couldn’t afford any more additions – even on loan.

That’s why rumours of interest in Swift make perfect sense.

The midfielder’s Reading contract expires in 2022, meaning he could be available for a bargain fee in January, or absolutely nothing next summer.

While his form in the Championship has been impressive, is he the kind of player who is going to help us kick on? Or is he more likely going to help us keep ‘ticking along’?

As long as Mike Ashley continues to own Newcastle United, we will continue to target players like this.
