John Anderson is astonished by what he’s heard from Newcastle fans after Milan draw

After earning a point at the San Siro last night there appeared to be a set of Newcastle United fans who weren’t happy for whatever reason.

There’ll not be many people out there who would classify Newcastle‘s performance last night on their return to the Champions League as anything better than “sufficient”.

Eddie Howe‘s men got the job done but if the AC Milan side had their shooting boots on (instead of clown boots in Rafael Leao’s case) then, yes, things could have been far worse.

Newcastle were on the back-foot for most of the game

The reality is, Newcastle returned to the upper echelon of club football after a 20 year absence and acquitted themselves admirably keeping Milan at bay for 95 minutes.

Newcastle played some nice football at times but just seemed to run out of ideas in the final third only having their first shot on target in the 94th minute.

The bottom line is Newcastle are off the mark with a point gained away from home in one of the most intimidating stadiums in Europe. Job done.

However, some fans were expecting more with one fan texting in to Radio Newcastle saying: : “Abject performance, one chance in 90 minutes. All the hype and then we bottle it and park the bus. Eddie’s tactics made that Milan side look like 1970’s Brazil. We’re not going to win the Champions League but at least have a go.”

John Anderson called for realism from Newcastle fans

The anonymous message riled up former magpie John Anderson who replied: “Who does he think we are? I mean, come on, give it a break will ya? First game back in the Champions League in 20 years, you go away to the San Siro and you get a point and somebody sends that in. A bit of realism here, please.”

I have to side with Ando here, the level of entitlement is off the scale sometimes. We had a fantastic season last year and as a club Newcastle are well ahead of schedule in PIF’s plans. We don’t necessarily have a Champions League squad yet as we weren’t supposed to be in the competition yet.

The fact that we are is amazing. Let’s just enjoy the ride and see how well this squad can do. My guess is we’ll surprise a few people.
