The future is very bright for Newcastle United youngster Elliot Anderson.

That is the view of former Toon midfielder Joey Barton, who has reacted to a video of Anderson scoring in Sunday night’s 3-3 draw with Aston Villa over in Philadelphia.

The 20-year-old scored Newcastle‘s first goal of the game, producing a sublime finish beyond Emi Martinez after chopping past Ezri Konsa, who made a last ditch attempt to deny the youngster.

But Anderson could not be stopped, and he was praised by Allan Saint-Maximin for his goal during the Premier League Summer Series clash.

Maxi was impressed, and so was Bristol Rovers boss Barton.

Following the game, Newcastle uploaded a video of Anderson’s goal to their official Twitter account. It prompted a reply from Barton.

He wrote: “Going to be some player this boy.”

Barton knows Anderson well. He was in charge of Bristol Rovers when the Geordie went there on loan during the second half of the 2021/22 campaign.

Anderson was exceptional during that spell, with Barton getting a front row seat to watch the next big thing coming out of Newcastle’s academy.

He was instrumental in the Gas winning promotion, and now Anderson is ready to excel at Premier League level. There were moments of magic last year, but it looks like the 2023/24 campaign could be his real breakthrough season.

His performances in pre-season so far have been excellent, and he continued his good form against Aston Villa. As well as scoring, he played a big role in the Magpies’ second goal of the game.

Eddie Howe was delighted, praising Anderson for how good he was in and around the box.

He needs goals and assists at the top level if he to continue standing out. That is why he was such a hit in League Two, but doing it at Premier League level is obviously something completely different.

There is confidence that he can do it though, and his former manager Barton has faith that Anderson is going to develop into a major star at St James’ Park.
