Joelinton is on course to set unwanted Premier League record this season

Joelinton looks set to return to the Newcastle United lineup this weekend following his two-game suspension for picking up 10 yellow cards this season. He is now on track to break an unwanted Premier League record this season.

Since Eddie Howe came to Newcastle he has worked hard with Joelinton to turn him from a laughing stock of a striker to arguably one of the best battling midfielders in the Premier League.

That new role has come at a cost however, as the Brazilian often finds himself in the referee’s book. Now The Express has reported that should he pick up four more cautions in the remaining 12 games he’ll equal the current record of yellow cards in a season.

Joelinton could find his name alongside that of Lee Cattermole

Eight other players share this ‘honour‘, one of which is a former Newcastle player: The late, great Cheick Tiote. Another notable ‘honouree’ is Lee Cattermole who achieved that feat while playing down the road for Sunderland. Paul Ince, Mark Hughes and Robbie Savage also find themselves on the top of the pile.

With 12 games to go and given Joelinton’s recent fiery temper, there’s every chance the 26-year-old could go one better and pick up another five cards this term making him the undisputed king of yellow cards.

There definitely does seem to be a new fire in Joelinton’s belly, he’s never one to shy away from getting in player’s faces if he feels wronged and while there’s never any malice in his challenges, they can often be pretty full blooded.

Add to that Newcastle’s propensity towards deploying time-wasting tactics, Joelinton becomes a massive yellow card risk.

While I wouldn’t be adverse to seeing him break the record this season in the sense that it would mean he’s given his all for the team, it’s hardly a record that any player would want on their CV. Joelinton is far from a dirty player, so to see his name up there alongside the likes of Robbie Savage and Lee Cattermole gives off the wrong impression.
