Joe Willock responds when asked if he will still be at Newcastle next season

Ever since he arrived from Arsenal, Joe Willock has been impressive.

His Newcastle debut couldn’t have gone much better, scoring in a 3-2 win over Southampton.

Sadly that was the last time we tasted victory. While Willock has been one of our more consistent performers, the results haven’t been good enough.

The on-loan midfielder has started every game since his arrival from the Emirates, walking into the Newcastle team ahead of both Longstaff brothers.

Bruce has stuck by his only January signing, and even tried to play him further up the pitch against West Brom. It didn’t work, but Willock was one of few players trying to make things happen for the Magpies.

The 21-year-old has been a positive addition, and would arguably look even better playing in a team with more confidence.

But could Willock stay at Newcastle beyond this season? In an interview with the club’s official website, the midfielder was asked just that.

“I love playing for Newcastle. When I first came here I was bit apprehensive of how I would take it because I’ve never left Arsenal,” Willock said.

“I’ve been at Arsenal since I was four and a half so coming to a new club, coming up north to Newcastle was a bit scary.

“But as I came here and I settled in and saw the love from the fans that I’ve been receiving and everyone is such like a family here.

“Of course I’d love to continue playing here and I love Newcastle at this moment in time.”

The youngster seems keen to stay at St James’ Park, although his final words of ‘at this moment in time’ seem a bit non-committal. However, Willock has certainly left the door open for a return to the north east.

It will all depend on whether or not Mikel Arteta has plans for him back at Arsenal. If he doesn’t, then Willock returning would certainly be a good idea.

His ability to drive with the ball is something no one else can do in the Newcastle squad, while he continues to show a desire to arrive in the box and score. He’s got one so far, but has came close on numerous occasions.

However, even if Arteta doesn’t want him at Arsenal, Willock may be less inclined to return if Newcastle drop down to the Championship.

For now, Willock must focus on keeping his temporary employers in the Premier League.
