Newcastle United tried to sign Joao Pedro earlier this summer but the Brazilian international ended up joining Chelsea instead.
Indeed, Newcastle United were confident about signing Pedro from Brighton, although he eventually ended up heading to Stamford Bridge.
It was a frustrating situation for the club. Newcastle wanted to sign Pedro in 2022 but eventually moved for Alexander Isak instead. While that move worked out on Tyneside, Isak would go on to leave them in the lurch three years later by forcing a British record transfer to Liverpool.
Pedro was not the only Newcastle target to end up with the Blues. Liam Delap also joined them from Ipswich, compounding the blow.
Now, the Brazilian international has opened up on his decision to join the west London giants.

Joao Pedro addresses potential move to Newcastle United
Speaking to Standard Sport, Pedro reflected on his move to Chelsea.
He admitted that he had the “chance” to join another club, which the Standard confirm was Newcastle.
Still, a move to London appealed to the forward, who previously played for Watford. He adds that he feels vindicated in the decision, claiming he “knew in my head” it was the correct step for him to take.
Pedro said: “When I was in Brighton, I was missing London a little bit.
“I had a chance to move to another club, but I chose Chelsea because it’s in London, it’s a big club, and I knew in my head it was the right move.”
Newcastle United may live to regret Joao Pedro decision
Pedro was stung by Newcastle’s move for Isak instead of him in 2022, which surely cannot have helped their cause this summer.
Having been a target for many years on Tyneside, it’s clear that he was rated highly by Eddie Howe.
Sadly for Newcastle, however, the chances of Pedro ever moving to the club now look remote.

The Brazil international has now hit the ground running for the Blues. Pedro scored three goals in as many games during Chelsea’s successful Club World Cup campaign and has since added two Premier League strikes to his haul for the club.
While Yoane Wissa and Nick Woltemade may prove to be brilliant signings for Newcastle, only time will tell about how costly missing out on Pedro has been.
