When Jetro Willems found space in the box against Liverpool, no one expected him to do what he did.
The Dutch defender skilfully shifted the ball onto his weaker right foot, then powered the ball past the despairing Adrian. Willems ran off celebrating, with the Magpies in front against the league leaders.

Obviously we would lose the game 3-1, but it was fun while it lasted.
With September now over, the nominees for the goal of the month award have been announced. And on the shortlist is Willems. Yes, a Newcastle United player has been nominated for an actual award.

But does the 25-year-old have a chance of winning? To be fair, yes. There were some decent goals scored in September, but no real standout strike.
For me, the favourite has to be Moussa Djenepo, whose solo goal against Sheffield United was sensational. It’s got to be between that, Willems’ goal and Fikayo Tomori’s long distance screamer against Wolves.

Fans can vote for their favourite goal on the official Premier League website, so hopefully the Toon Army can rally behind Willems and win him the goal of the month award.
It’s the only trophy we’ve got any chance of winning anytime soon.
