Jermaine Jenas wants Spurs to beat Newcastle to James Maddison

James Maddison is still said to be Newcastle United’s top target this summer but will face competition from other clubs including Tottenham Hotspur. Now Jermain Jenas has added his thoughts to the situation.

Like so many players before him, Jenas has had the distinct pleasure of representing both Newcastle and Spurs in his career, but Geordies will not forget the way in which JJ left Newcastle for the bright lights of London, firing off his “goldfish bowl” parting shot.

It left a bitter taste in the collective mouths of the Toon Army who believe playing for Newcastle should be an honour not a chore. Now Jenas has spoken to FourFourTwo magazine and suggested that Spurs should sign Maddison ahead of Newcastle.

Jenas sympathises with the Spurs fans

“I’m totally with the standpoint of ‘What’s the point in building this big stadium and having all this lovely stuff if you’re not going to invest properly and challenge for a league title?’ I think the frustration from the fans is that they seem to just half-heart everything.

“It’s like, are they ever going to get to a window, like this summer and go, ‘You know what? We need James Maddison: go and get him.”

It just feels like a dig

Jenas does point out that Tottenham often seem reluctant to spend and that’s what is winding up the Spurs fans and hopefully that continues this summer leaving the door wide open for Newcastle to swoop in and scoop up Maddison before Daniel Levy (and maybe Antonio Conte still?) make their move.

While Jenas stops short of saying Spurs should go and challenge Newcastle for Maddison himself, it does seem a little bit odd that he’d choose Maddison to make his point, almost as if he wanted to have that little dig. Or maybe I’m reading too much into it.
