Jermaine Jenas says ‘monstrous’ Newcastle could soon have more ‘firepower’

Newcastle United are in a rather strange position.

While, in the grand scheme of things, not qualifying for the Champions League during the first full season of the PIF era can hardly be considered an outrage, just how close they are to doing so complicates expectations.

Having been in the top four for much of the season, not getting over the line at this stage would be disappointing.

Indeed, even after a rocky patch of late, Eddie Howe’s side are on course to do so. Though they trail Tottenham by two points, Newcastle have a game in hand and their destiny is in their own hands.

If they do make it back to Europe’s top table, it will be fascinating to see who arrives this summer.

Newcastle back in the Champions League could be a game-changer

Former Newcastle midfielder Jermaine Jenas has also been full of praise for the potential achievement.

The BBC Sport and BT Sport pundit said (via The Mirror): “Europe was a target for them this year, no doubt, but with top four right in their sights – that’d be monstrous,” he added.

“It will also give them the firepower in the transfer market. If you’re a top player in Europe and have a choice between Newcastle and Spurs, well you’re going to Newcastle because they are in the Champions League. It’s a no-brainer. That will see them eclipse the teams fighting for that position.”

The Champions League could send Newcastle into a new world

The financial rewards qualification for the Champions League could unlock new doors for Newcastle.

While FFP limitations have loomed over the spending over the last two windows, it would be exhilarating to see what kind of players the club could attract should they make it back into Europe’s elite competition.

Backed by huge money as it is, trying to get back into the top four at Newcastle’s expense would be a hugely difficult ask to any of the established order in the Premier League right now.
