Jason Cundy says he wouldn’t have ‘overrated’ Newcastle-linked forward at Chelsea

TalkSPORT’s Jason Cundy has said he wouldn’t have Newcastle United target Neymar anywhere near Chelsea.

Not a day goes by lately when Neymar‘s name isn’t mentioned in sports media, and his name is so often followed by Newcastle United as journalists link the Magpies with any player with exorbitant transfer fees due to our wealthy backers.

Chelsea, given their propensity for burning money, are also linked to the Brazilian international megastar, but Jason Cundy isn’t happy with that idea.

In a passionate rant on TalkSPORT, Jason Cundy was very clear why he didn’t want Neymar at Chelsea, and while not all of his points were spot on, some of the things he said should definitely have Newcastle thinking twice were there any truth in the links.

Neymar is set to leave Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the season and Cundy said: “There’s a reason why PSG are trying to sell him. He’s obviously a brilliant player, I think he’s overrated, he’s nowhere near the bracket of Messi.”

It’s a bit strong to say he’s overrated, he’s clearly got the ability and he’s had the career to back it up, but some of the other things Cundy said about him do ring true: “Neymar, there’s a circus around him.

“I would rather have [James] Maddison in the dressing room, around the training ground.

“They [PSG] can’t wait to boot him out. Why? Because he’s a bad egg.”

I actually agree with everything he said there. Wherever Neymar goes there will be a feeling that he’s bigger than the club such is the hype that follows him around.

Newcastle certainly won’t want anyone who draws that kind of attention. Eddie Howe‘s philosophy is clear – everyone has to have a team-first mentality, and for me, Neymar doesn’t fall into that way of thinking.

As for being a bad egg, Neymar has certainly had his critics for his behaviour. Seemingly driven by ego, Neymar has often found himself on the naughty list at PSG. The Daily Mail highlighted the highs and lows of Neymar in Paris, it makes for some interesting reading.

And to make it a hattrick of things I agree with Jason Cundy about (I am not comfortable with this either, don’t worry), I too would rather have James Maddison.

I’ve made no secret of my admiration of James Maddison, but my confidence in him becoming a Newcastle player is dwindling as more and more clubs show an interest in the Leicester playmaker.

As far as Newcastle’s interest in Neymar goes, I really hope it is just journalists linking him with the “richest club” as a way to create a story because as good as he is and as good as he’d be for generating revenue, he’s not the right fit for Newcastle.
